4. Date Change: Third Australia Drymix Mortar Meeting Moved to Thursday, 18. February

2016
After we published the information concerning our next meeting in Australia, we noticed that it conflicts with World of Concrete, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Quite some of our friends down under regularly go there, so we decided to move the date. The Third Australia Drymix Mortar Meeting will take place on Thursday, 18. February 2016, location remains Novotel Sydney Brighton Beach as initially announced. We apologize if we caused any inconvenience. A delegate welcome is planned for 17. February, 20:00, it is being sponsored by Wacker Chemie (thanks a lot!).

The Call for Papers for this meeting is still running, so we are still accepting lecturing proposals. Sponsoring is of course welcome, too!

5. Short Report from The Third Malaysia Executive Forum on Drymix Mortars

Together with its Partners Lafarge and The Construciton Industry Development Board of Malaysia (CIDB), The South East Asia Drymix Mortar Association SEADMA had invited to The Third Malaysia Executive Forum on Drymix Mortars, which took place at Seri Pacific Hotel, Kuala Lumpur on 25. August 2015. The forum was provocatively titled "Automated Mortar Application Eliminates The Need for Jobsite Mixing" and the four lectures (in consecutive order) by Nurlijan Noerjanto (SEADMA), Dr. Alan Tan (Lafarge), Si-Main Loo (Lafarge) and Ferdinand Leopolder (SEADMA) tackled the issue from various angles. The meeting was attended by drymix mortar manufacturers, contractors, developers and government officials (from CIDB).

In his opening speech, YBhg. Dato' Sri Dr. Judin Abdul Karim welcomed the initiative and encouraged the assembly to push forward on this important issue by joining in CIDB's Industry Transformation Programme which is intended to increase productivity and quality in the Malaysian construction industry. He said that only by implementing efficient building technology, the demand for foreign labor can be confined in Malaysia. He mentioned a study of Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM), in which a need for 2 mio construction workers in Malaysia is forecasted by 2020. Drymix mortar specifications (as opposed to jobsite mixtures) should be brought into the Government's specifications, here alone, the Nation of Malaysia intends to spend 53,000 Mio Euro (260 bio MYR) within the next decade.

The delegates decided to form a round table which will meet in Kuala Lumpur in the near future to lift the topic "Ban on Jobsite Mixtures" to the Ministerial Level in Malaysia.

6. SEADMA EC Member Invited to Join Building Materials Committee in Thailand

Pairat Pipattanaboon, long time Executive Committee member of The South East Asia Drymix Mortar Association SEADMA has been invited to join the Thai Ministry of Industries Building Materials Committee. He acts there on behalf of SEADMA and the recently founded Thai Drymix Mortar Manufacturers Association ThaiDMMA, which is headed by Kitti Boonprakong. The Thai Building Materials Committee is advising the Government on the specifications of building materials, including drymix mortars such as cementitious tile adhesives (CTA). The appointment of Pairat Pipattanaboon is the first success of the newly founded Thai DMMA which became active only earlier this year. Thai DMMA will report about its activities (along with Phil DMA and the Indonesia Initiative) at SEADMA's Tenth Anniversary Conference in Bangkok, Thailand (see item 3 above).

7. Kerneos Starts Construction of HAC-Plant in India

Kerneos SA of Neuilly, France has announced the greenfield construction of a High Alumina Cement (HAC) plant in Visakhapatnam (Andrha Pradesh), India. According to Kerneos, the refractory industry is growing fast in India, so most of the domestically produced and imported HAC goes into steel production. Currently, Kerneos sells HAC from its plants in China and France to India and the new plant is dedicated entirely to satisfy demand in India in the future. According to Segi P. Idicula, Managing Director of Kerneos Middle East and India, the plant will cost around 17 mio Euro and will have a capacity of 30.000 t/a. The plant at Visakhapatnam will be Kerneos' 12th manufacturing location worldwide.

8. Lafarge Germany Becomes Opterra

In the wake of the Holcim merger with Lafarge (we reported earlier), the new group LafargeHolcim (Jona, Switzerland) had to spin off the German Lafarge operations for anti-trust reasons. It becomes part of Irish building materials group CRH plc., Dublin. As in other regions, CRH has found a new name for this activity: Opterra. The company is headquartered in Karsdorf/Unstrut (near Leipzig). Opterra is focussed on the production of cement at 4 plants all over Germany, its capacity is 3,5 mio t of OPC per year.
