Personal Factory has been established as a spin-off of the technical research division of company N.T.C. of Tassone Giuseppe S.a.s. (Simbario) which was founded in 1993, and focusses on industrial plant design for many applications. The company has in-house expertise in software, mechanical and chemical engineering as well as mechanics modelling and up- and downscaling. For the drymix mortar industry, Personal Factory has constructed a micro-plant called Origami, which is extremely mobile and requires only a floor space of 6 square meters for its main components (without silos).

We warmly welcome Personal Factory in our Community.

6. Cimental Starts Production of Redispersible Powder in Brasil

Cimental Fermaflex, São Paulo, Brasil, a distributor of drymix mortar additives, has recently started the production of redispersible powders in Brasil. A new spray tower with an annual capacity of 10.000 t has been installed in Itaquaquecetuba, on the outskirts of São Paulo. Cimental is beginning with the production of Ethylene/Vinyl Acetate powders based on dispersions obtained from Celanese. Cimental plans to form a joint-venture with Celanese in order to build a future local polymerization unit.

7. Lafarge Partners with Solidia to Reduce Carbon Footprint of Pre-Cast Concrete Elements

Lafarge SA, Paris, France has signed a partnership agreement with Solidia Technologies, Picataway, NJ, USA, to industrialize a technology that could reduce the environmental footprint of pre-cast concrete. The process developed by the US start-up allows lower CO2 emissions during the cement production process itself plus actual capturing of CO2 during precast concrete manufacturing process. In principle this precast process uses the possibility of gassing CO2 into the forms or tools, which is not yet possible in regular concrete applications. The partners expect an overall reduction of the CO2 emissions by precast concrete to up to 70%, when compared with conventionally manufactured concrete parts. Other partners of Solidia include BASF, BP and two capital investors.

8. BASF Increases Prices for Polymer Dispersions

BASF SE of Ludwigshafen, Germany, has announced a price increase for polymer dispersions in Europe, Africa, and Western Asia. Prices for pure acrylic and styrene/acrylic polymer dispersions will be raised by up to 80 Euro per metric ton and for redispersible acrylic powders and acrylic resins by up to 120 Euro per metric ton. BASF states a significant rise in the cost of raw materials as reason for this price increase. The price increase becomes effective from 15. October 2013, or as contracts allow.

9. MEDMA forms Workgroup on Facade Insulation

The Middle East Drymix Mortar Association (MEDMA) has formed a technical workgroup for Facade Insulation Specification for New and Existing Buildings in the GCC Nations in August 2013. The core team, consisting of representatives of MEDMA members and partners BASF, Henkel, Caparol and Wacker is being headed by Mohammed Sanaobar, Technical Chairman of MEDMA. The Workgroup's intention is to to assist in advancing the specifications for EIF (ETIC) Systems and driving higher quality standards in the GCC Nations with particular focus on the UAE and Dubai.

The first attention of the new MEDMA Workgroup is given to fire safety. A kick-off meeting was already held in September 2013 with experts from Dubai Municipality (DM) and Dubai Civil Defense Department (DCD), where the basic outlines of the necessary changes to existing regulations were discussed. To this meeting, MEDMA invited also several non-members, in order to achieve a common accord and a unanimous voice. The MEDMA Workgroup then drafted an official recommendation, which is being finished and submitted to the authorities within October 2013. The document clarifies testing requirements (ETAG, EIMA) for EIFS concerning fire hazards and can be obtained (once submitted) by MEDMA members by request to info@drymix.info.
