3. Market for Construction in Dubai Recovering

There seems to be light on the horizon for the construction economy in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. While the situation was grim in the past two years, with offices closing and expatriates moving abroad, the demand for office space has picked up according to recent reports. It is believed by analysts, that this trend will start mothballed projects immediately. After the financial crisis hit fully in 2010, rents and leases for residential and commercial real estate had dropped dramatically. Now Cluttons, a real estate consulting firm, has issued a report on these market sectors showing increased occpancies and rising rents. Another trend has been observed in order to fit the offers to the market: owners and developers are decreasing floor space of both existing and future flats and retail locations in order to meet the demand and minimize their risk. It is said that newer buildings in Sheikh Zayed Road fetch approximately 1.000 to 1.400 AED/sq.m./a (210 to 290 Euro/sq.m./a). Properties at Downtown, the area around Burj Khalifa, reach about 20 to 40% on top of theses rents.

4. Wacker Increases Prices for VAc/E Dispersions in The Americas

Wacker Polymers, a division of Wacker Chemie AG, based in Munich, Germany, will increase its prices for vinyl acetate-ethylene and ethylene-vinyl chloride-based copolymer dispersions in the Americas. Effective 1. May, 2013, Wacker will implement a price increase of $0.03 (€0,02) per wet pound (0,45 wet kilos), or as customer contracts allow. Wacker cites a continued increase in raw-material cost as reason for this measure.

6. HeidelbergCement Looses Appeal against Anti-Trust Fine from 2003

HeidelbergCement AG, Heidelberg, Germany, has finally lost their appeal in German Courts against the hefty anti-trust fine issued by the German Antitrust Office in 2003 (we reported earlier). The German Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe has recently confirmed a ruling of Oberlandesgericht (OLG) Düsseldorf concerning this matter. The fine of 250 mio Euro had been issued in 2003 for alledged price fixing for cement. It was reduced from 250 mio Euro to 170 mio Euro by OLG Düsseldorf, and another deduction of 8,5 mio Euro was granted due to the extremely long period of court negotiations in this particular case. HeidelbergCement must pay now 161,4 mio Euro.

7. Energy Technology and Insulation Yield Huge Savings

According to a recently issued study commissioned by Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (DENA), Berlin, Germany, thermal insulation, the use of special building materials as well as de-centralized (in- or on-house) energy production yields the desired success. DENA, a semi-Governmental agency administering the German programme for the energetical refurbishment and enabling of existing as well as new buildings has analyzed the energy consumption of 63 buildings, where energy savings of 80% were expected. The buildings represent over 20% of the DENA supported renovations with several heating periods (350 projects since 2003). On average, the energy consumption could be reduced from 223 kWh/sq.m. to 54 kWh/sq.m., which means a saving of 74%. According to Dr. Peter Ramsauer, Building Minister of Germany, over 115.000 mio Euro have been spent by the German Government for energetical refurbishment since the beginning of the programme.
