Tile Adhesives’ Elastic Modulus: its Dependency on Formulation Properties and its Influence on Ceramic Installations Stability

The tile adhesive as the elastic component of the ceramic installation has the role of absorbing stresses that might come from the substrate, the building structure, or the tiles. Ultrasonic measurement on different tile adhesives formulations can describe elastic modulus evolution due to hydration kinetics, and can highlight differences in modulus as a function of fundamental formulation parameters, such as the Tg and the form of the polymer – whether it is a redispersible powder or a latex – and the characteristics of the hydrated binder, hydrated calcium silicate as product of Portland cement dominated systems or ettringite, when fast setting ternary binders are being used. We will then study how different elastic moduli of cementitious tile adhesives can influence thermal stability of the installations using a testing method – already presented and described in previous presentations – that exploits the expansion of engineered stone tiles subjected to heating and cooling cycles.

Project Report: 3D Mortar Printing of a Stand-alone Residential Building with Two Floors in Beckum, Germany

Using 3D printing (additive construction) in building provides various attractive perspectives for developers and contracting companies: there is the chance to reduce manpower while at the same time building 24h a day. Especially in developed markets, where experienced craftsmen and construction experts are scarce, this is a large advantage. Also, materials for (concrete) formwork and construction waste in general could be reduced to a minimum. One can also expect an increase in built quality due to the automated and tightly controlled processes. The real break-through of this technology will come, once serial printing is introduced on a commercial level.

Since the technology is new and only in a trial phase, no regulations exist at this point in time, so a house with load-bearing walls built with 3D Mortar Printing technology needs to comply with the existing building standards in terms of zoning, dimensional stability, durability, energy consumption, health requirements and so on. Within 6 weeks, in autumn of 2020, a stand-alone residential building with two floors and 160 sq.m. living space has been printed in Beckum, Germany. The author tries to summarize the project from the idea to its design concept, the permitting process and the actual construction. A technology summary and an outlook by the author complete this project study.

This concludes our publishing of the abstracts from the Drymix Mortar Yearbook 2021 (DMYB 2021). The DMYBs are the only annual publications entirely focussed on professional information for drymix mortar experts worldwide. DMYB 2021 costs 21,40 € including 7% VAT and global handling and shipping. Order your copy of the Drymix Mortar Yearbook 2021 now! In our shop at drymix.info.

2. In one Week: 5th MORTAR CONVENTION, 27. to 29. April 2021

The 5th MORTAR CONVENTION, organized by drymix.info, The International Community for Drymix Mortars, starts Tuesday next week. The entire program of this Live Event Online will be presented in three segments, EAST (27.9.21), WEST (April 28, 2021) and CENTRAL (29. April 21) to provide convenient attendance to all our delegates worldwide. Apart from the usual suspects, we have obtained quite a few new registrations from the US and Canada, Central America and Brasil, also e.g. from Suriname, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Taiwan, Costa Rica, Japan, Kosovo, Mauritius, Sri Lanka and Korea. One more reason to register, we can assure you to meet interesting people...

We have worked on the additional features during the last weeks: Delegates can call for their own roundtable meeting during the breaks, or just enjoy a drink, no, sorry, a Live Video Chat at the drymix.info Bar. During our lecturing program, there will be 8 training sessions for your body and soul called “Home Office Fitness” (with Leo) and we have lined up live chats with friends from all around the world. Also there is a contest with prizes for the busiest networkers during our 5th MORTAR CONVENTION. And our Industry Showcase has grown to over 30 Company Displays already (additional sponsoring is welcome).

Delegates that have completed their registration (about 250 as of today, great!) will receive their login data tomorrow. With this access code, we recommend you to already create your profile, have a picture and a short text ready, this will save you time next week.

If you have registered, but don't get an access code tomorrow, something went wrong with your application - but no worries, there is enough time to fix that - just send us an e-mail.

Of course further registrations are welcome, those delegates will get their access code immediately after completion of payment. The admission, valid for all three days, is 120 Euro per person, reduced for drymix.info, MEDMA and SEADMA partners to 80 Euro. Drymix mortar manufacturers pay only 40 Euro. Please register yourself at www.drymix.info using your credit card (Visa or Master accepted). Individual invoicing for bank-to-bank transfer is not encouraged, sorry.

3. Postponed into 2022: The Fifth Central American Drymix Mortar Meeting (Mexico City)

drymix.info has recently informed its friends in the Central American Region that unfortunately the Central American Drymix Mortar Meeting has to be postponed for the second time. Initially scheduled for 2020, then for July 2021, the pandemic situation forces us to postpone into June 2022. Our the last meeting took in person took place in beautiful Medellín, Colombia, back in 2018, Melize, Carlos and I suggest we meet online at 5th MORTAR CONVENTION (see above).

4. Sopro does not Rule out Price Increase

Sopro Bauchemie GmbH, Wiesbaden, Germany, has recently announced that it “does not rule out a price increase ...” in the course of 2021. According to Sopro, many construction chemical manufacturers are currently confronted with an extraordinary shortage of raw materials and partially massively rising costs for process intermediates. In this situation, Sopro fears to have to reduce delivery of certain end-products, possibly even already in this quarter of 2021. Although Sopro feels itself well positioned for the bulk of its products, price increases can not be exluded as an option for the time span this supply crisis persists. Details on which products are concerned were not given, customers will receive first notice.

5. Porotec Becomes Part of Verder Scientific

Verder B.V., Groningen, The Netherlands has taken over all shares of Porotec GmbH, Hofheim TS, Germany. Porotec was integrated into Verder Scientific's Microtrac MRB Division. With several acquisitions in the field of lab equiment manufacturers in recent years, Verder Scientific has formed Microtrac MRB as a globally operating expert company in particle analysis. The portfolio includes (amongst others) Microtrac Retsch (particle characterization), MicrotracBEL (Gas Sorption Analysis) and Microtrac Inc.  (Dynamic Laser Particle Analysis) as well as now, last but not least, Porotec (porosity and density measurements). Manufacturing and R&D are in located in Haan, Germany (near Düsseldorf), Philadelphia, PA, USA and Osaka, Japan.

6. Imerys Aluminates Announces Price Increase

The Building and Infrastructure Division of Imerys Aluminates, Paris, France, has announced a price increase for high alumina cements, functional additives and minerals. The company cites the disruption of international logistic routes due to the unbalanced global trade situation as well as increases in raw materials, intermediates and packaging costs - in some cases caused by force majeure - as reasons for this step. Imerys will apply a surcharge on all products between to 5 to 7%, effective 1. May 2021.
