1. Drymix Mortar Yearbook 2021 - Content and Subscription Instructions

The Drymix Mortar Yearbook 2021 (DMYB2021) is almost complete, it will be printed in a week. It would help us a lot if you told us how many copies and where to (exact postal address) you would like to order. The price of the DMYB2021 is 21,40, you can order it in our shop. It has become a great book, with scientific articles, project report and advertorials from our supporters. Here is a preliminary List of Content of the Drymix Mortar Yearbook 2021 (subject to change without notice; sorted by company/Institution):

Calucem GmbH, M. Schmid, A. Gerz, G. Walenta: Highly Efficient Calcium Aluminate Cements for Modern Building Products
Dow Europe, M. Perello, S. Menz: The Impact of MC and RDP on a Mortar’s Microstructure
drymix.info GmbH, F. Leopolder: Project Report: 3D Mortar Printing of a Stand-alone Residential Building with Two Floors in Beckum, Germany
Imerys, P. Taquet et al.: (working title) New Technology: A Specialty Binder Pushing further the Synchronization of Ettringite Formation
LPM AG, R. Zurbriggen: Extended Open Time – the Need for Standardization of an Essential Characteristic of Tile Adhesives

Technische Universität München TUM, J. Plank: Chemical Admixtures Used in Digital Manufacturing (3D Printing) of Building Materials

Please note, that the 2021 issue of the Drymix Mortar Yearbook has a significantly higher relevance and importance than in „normal“ times: a multitude of events for our industry  - not only organized by drymix.info, MEDMA or SEADMA - have been cancelled due to the current pandemic. So our Drymix Mortar Yearbook 2021 is the only means of physical interaction for our industry at this point in time until (estimated) mid-year.

2. Third ICCCM as Live Event Online from 15. to 17. March 2021

The Third International Conference on the Chemistry of Construction Materials (3. ICCCM) takes place as Live Event Online from 15. to 17. March 2021 (the conference was initially planned for September 2020 in beautiful Karlsruhe in the Rhine valley). The Conference Chairman is Prof. Dr. Andreas Gerdes of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The event is being organized by the Construction Chemicals Group at German Society of Chemists (GDCh Fachgruppe Bauchemie). On three days in March, there is a wonderful program with 71 lectures and 3 workshops on the topics Sustainable Construction Materials (31), Admixtures and Additives (16), Performance and Durability (17) and Digitalization in construction chemistry (7).

drymix.info is supporting this conference since 2003. On behalf of drymix.info, I would like to ask our community to actively participate in 3. ICCCM by registering for the comprehensive technical program, the workshops and the virtual exhibition there. drymix.info Partner MBCC Group (represented by booths of PCI Group and Master Builder Solutions) is exclusive Platinum Sponsor of 3. ICCCM, our partners Borregaard, BYK Chemie, Calucem, C3 Analysentechnik, Evonik, Poraver, Schleibinger and Wacker Chemie are also supporting the event with booth and presence.

The program and the delegate registration are available at German Society of Chemists (www.GDCh.de).

3. NEW DATE for 5th MORTAR CONVENTION: 27. April 2021

The 5th MORTAR CONVENTION takes place as Live Event Online on 27. April 2021. We decided to move the event in order not to be too close to 3. ICCCM (see above). Contributors and supporters are encouraged to submit lecturing proposals until 26. February 2021. The 5th MORTAR CONVENTION also features our Industry Showcase (virtual exhibition), which was well frequented in October. The timing of the Live Event Online will allow delegates from all around the globe since we will be streaming the scientific program in three almost identical segments EAST, Central and WEST.

Attendance to the 5th MORTAR CONVENTION is limited to 500 delegates per segment, admission is 120 Euro per person, reduced for drymix.info, MEDMA and SEADMA partners to 80 Euro. Drymix mortar manufacturers pay only 40 Euro. Please support your drymix mortar community by registering immediately at www.drymix.info using your credit card (Visa or Master accepted). Individual invoicing for bank-to-bank transfer is not possible, sorry.

4. Uzin Utz Expands in The Netherlands and Plans Second Production Plant in the US

Uzin Utz AG of Ulm, Germany has announced plans to expand its activities in The Netherlands. Uzin has been based in Haaksbergen (South of Enschede, close to the German border) since 1967 and had moved into a sustainable building on the Stepelerveld industrial park in the end of 2013. Uzin now purchased an area of 33.000 square meters there for the establishment of production lines similar to Ulm, lab, admin and a logistic location for the entire Northern European region (according to Uzin, one important point is to relieve the warehouses in Ulm).

Uzin Utz AG also announced expanding in the US: Uzin Utz North America, Inc, Aurora, Colorado has purchased a 61.000 square meter lot near Waco, Texas. The company plans to have their second production location in the US running by 2022. The 12.500 square meter production facility will produce self-leveling compounds, patches, thin sets, grouts, and other product categories in the future. In addition to manufacturing Uzins North America Training Center as well as the central R&D is planned for the Waco, TX. The currently allocated investment is 28 mio Euro (USD 34 mio). Waco, TX is the third location of Uzin in the US, the company also operates a drymix mortar plant on the East Coast in Dover, Delaware.

5. MBCC Group Raises Prices in Europe Effective Immediately

Master Builders Solutions Deutschland GmbH (MBCC Group), Mannheim, Germany, has recently announced a price increase. The company will raise the prices for Master Builders Solutions products in Europe by 4-6% on average with immediate effect or as existing contracts allow. According to MBCC Group, the current pandemic situation has caused supply constraints concerning important raw materials as well as an increase in raw material costs and other expenses such as production, freight, logistics and IT.

6. PPG and Akzo Nobel Battle to Take over Tikkurila

PPG, Pittsburgh, PA, USA and Akzo Nobel, Amsterdam, The Netherlands have both shown interest to take over the coating, paint, lacquer and building material producer Tikkurila Oyj, Vantaa, Finland. This January, PPG made a non-binding offer of 1.100 mio Euro for Tikkurila, translating into a cash offer of 25 Euro per share. Immediately afterwards, Akzo Nobel published a comprehensive non-binding offer amounting to 31,25 Euro per share (1.375 mio Euro). Both PPG and AkzoNobel have published terms and conditions under which they want to take over Tikkurila.

Tikkurila was founded in 1862 and has subsidiaries in 11 countries, 80% of the company's business is in the Baltic Nations and Russia. Tikkurila employs 2.700 people and reached a turnover of 564 mio Euro in 2019.

7. Germany: Building Permits up in November by 8,9 Percent

The German Bureau of Statistics (Deutsches Statistisches Bundesamt, Destatis), Wiesbaden, Germany, registered a substantial increase in building permits issued in the last months of 2020 and for last year overall. In November 2020, 32.531 projected flats (units) obtained their permit, which represents an increase of 8,9 Percent over November 2019. For the period from January bis November 2020 the increase is 3,9 Percent over the same period 2019. These figures include new construction as well as major renovation projects in existing building complexes. As reported earlier, it seems that the current pandemic does not strongly impact the building activity in Germany.

8. Cevisama Valencia Cancelled entirely

And yet another cancellation of an important industry gathering: Fira de València, Spain, the organizers of Cevisama have decided to cancel the event. Cevisama, key event for kitchen and bathroom design and installation, had already been postponed from February to May. After consulting with the relevant industry associations and the major exhibitors and monitoring the pandemic evolution, the organizers could not but take this decision.
