1. Remembering Dr. Giorgio Squinzi

Giorgio Squinzi was born in Cisano Bergamasco, Italy in 1943, he recently died at age 76. Giorgio Squinzi studied industrial (organic) chemistry at University of Milano and obtained his phD there. After his studies, he started working with Mapei SpA, a construction chemical company founded by his father, Rodolfo Squinzi back in 1937. Dr. Giorgio Squinzi took over as general manager of Mapei in 1976, and he quickly expanded this business worldwide. Today, Mapei has over 10.000 employees all around the globe, the group has 89 subsidiaries in 36 Nations and reached a turnover of 2.500 mio Euro in 2018.

Dr. Squinzi was a creative, intrepid and far-sighted entrepreneur and philanthropist. He held several important positions in the Italian Chemical Society and in the General Confederation of the Italian Industry (Confindustria), also he took strong interest in the standardization of tile adhesives and led several quality initiatives to calibrate and improve laboratory findings on drymix mortars. His fascination of sports led him to support professional cycling (with an own team until 2003) and later football, where he took ownership of US Sassuolo Calcio (today Serie A). "Mai smettere di pedalare" (never stop pedaling) was one of Dr. Squinzi's mottos.

Dr. Giorgio Squinzi has shaped drymix mortar technology both in terms of industrial, integrated production as well as in terms of technical development all over the world. Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife Adriana and his children Veronica and Marco.
