1. Third MEDMA Workshop on 4. March 2019, Topic: EIFS at Dubai Central Labs

Dubai Municipality/Dubai Central Laboratories (DCL), Al Karama, Dubai UAE and The Middle East Drymix Mortar Association MEDMA e.V. are inviting construction experts to join the third MEDMA Workshop, Topic this time are External Insulation and Finishing Systems (EIFS). The workshop takes place on Monday, 4. March 2019 from 9:30 to 14:00 at Al Karama Campus of Dubai Central Labs.

After the success of our 2nd Workshop on Renders and Plasters at Sharjah Research Academy, we had many companies already committing to support our next one: The MEDMA workshops are designed for contractors, consultants and developers, they are being supported by MEDMA members and other drymix mortar producers and suppliers to our industry. At this point in time, Conmix, JK Cement, Terraco, Thomas Bell Wright, Saint Gobain Weber (Sodamco), Vitrulan and Wacker Chemie have already confirmed their support. Seating is limited and we already have many confirmations from engineering and design consultants (they are given absolute priority). So pre-registration is absolutely mandatory and we would be sad if we had to turn experts away.

Admission is free of charge for MEDMA members (and mortar manufacturers) and their guests, please contact drymix.info immediately. Free admission is limited to 2 delegates per company, additional special admission for mortar manufacturers is 150 Euro. Industry observers (raw material and/or equipment suppliers) are admitted too, they pay 390 Euro, reduced for members of drymix.info or MEDMA e.V. to 290 Euro.

2. idmmc7, Nürnberg, Germany on 18. March 2019: Already over 120 Delegates!

The Seventh International Drymix Mortar Conference and Industry Showcase idmmc7 takes place in Nürnberg, Germany, on 18. March 2019 (also featuring a casual welcome on 17.3.2019, see below). We are happy to say that we have already received 120 registrations from all over the world, it will be a truly international event where you can meet and network extensively (our program provides gives ample time for this!). Our Technical Committee consists of Prof. Dr. Johann Plank, Technische Universität München, Germany (TUM; Technical Chairman), Prof. Dr. Andreas Gerdes, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Dr. Scott Jones, National Institute of Science and Technology NIST, Washington, D.C., USA and Rainer Ålgars, self-employed, Finland. The Drymix Mortar Yearbook 2019 will be issued on occasion of this conference.

As on the past 6 occasions, there is a casual Delegate Welcome at Barfüsser im Mautkeller the day before (Sunday, 17.3.19, 19:00) to which all delegates are invited (pre-registration mandatory, sorry, only delegates registered for idmmc7 can be admitted), this event is being sponsored by Wacker Chemie, IMCD and Calucem, thanks a lot!

Admission to idmmc7 is 550 Euro, reduced to 420 Euro for drymix.info, SEADMA and MEDMA members. There is a special admission for drymix mortar manufacturers which is only 280 Euro (no further deductions applicable to this special offer). Registration with credit card payment (Visa or Mastercard only) is open on www.drymix.info. Please note that these prices include 19% German VAT.

3. DATE CHANGE: Casual drymix.info Evening ON BAUMA, 11. April 2019: Haver&Boecker Invites to Party

It has become a nice tradition, that drymix.info arranges a casual evening for tired international guests and showgoers during BAUMA. This time (like in 2016), Haver&Boecker invites us to their booth at BAUMA in Hall B, Stand B2.149 on THURSDAY 11. April 2019, 18:00. The band playing is HotSaxClub. Haver&Boecker is even providing one day fair passes for 11.4.19 for those who need one, please enquire with us.

4. 6th India Drymix Mortar Conference, Mumbai, 9. May 2019: Program; Registration open

The 6th India Drymix Mortar Conference and Industry Showcase takes place on Thursday, 9. May 2019 in Mumbai at the splendid ITC Maratha Hotel (near Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport). The Construction Chemical Manufacturer's Association of India (CCMAI) and its members have agreed again to be the co-host of this event. The 6th India Drymix Mortar Conference unites construction materials experts from the Indian Subcontinent, the Middle East and South East Asia as well as from Europe for a practical and scientific exchange of ideas and concepts. The Drymix Mortar Yearbook 2019 will be distributed to each registered delegate of this event. The online registration is already open in our shop at drymix.info. Admission to the 6th Indian Drymix Mortar Conference is 390 € per person, reduced to 290 € for drymix.info, MEDMA and/or SEADMA partners. Drymix mortar manufacturers pay only 150 € per person. There is a special rebate for drymix mortar makers coming from abroad (Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangla Desh, as well as from SEA or the Middle East): it is only 100 € per person. 5. CHANGE OF LOCATION: ScalingUp 3D - The Interdisciplinary Symposium on Printable Mortars, Vienna, Austria, 27. and 28. June 2019

As announced earlier, Scaling Up 3D - The Interdisciplinary Conference on Printable Mortars, is being organized by drymix.info on 27. and 28. June 2019. The 1,5 day event will take place in Vienna, Austria (NOT in Washington DC, USA!) and include one excursion. Our Call for Papers has ended last week and the Technical Committee is currently reviewing the submissions (to be published in our next Newsletter and – earlier – online). Our Technical Committee consists of: Dr. Scott Z. Jones, National Institute of Standards and Technology NIST, Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA, Prof. Dr. Dietmar Aloys Stephan, Technische Universität Berlin, Germany and Ferdinand Leopolder. The ScalingUp 3D Symopsium will include a practical demonstration, this much I can already announce here. Sponsoring and support, especially by the machinery, automation and additives industry will be highly appreciated, the final location in Vienna itself remains to be determined.

Admission to ScalingUp 3D is 950 Euro, reduced to 750 Euro for drymix.info, SEADMA and MEDMA members. There is a special admission for drymix mortar manufacturers which is only 550 Euro (no further deductions applicable to this offer). Registration with credit card payment (Visa or Mastercard only) opens on www.drymix.info next week. Please note that these prices include 20% Austrian VAT.

6. Arkan Dry Mortar Joins MEDMA as a Member

Arkan Dry Mortar, a division of Emirates Blocks, Abu Dhabi, has decided to join the Middle East Drymix Mortar Association MEDMA e.V.. Arkan Dry Mortar operates a large, fully-automated drymix mortar plant in Al Mafraq Industrial Area in Abu Dhabi. The company started its operations in 2016. Arkan Dry Mortar produces masonry mortars, renders, tile adhesives/grouts and other specialty mortars. In addition to delivering in bags and big bags, Arkan Dry Mortar is also promoting the use bulk silos and application machines for efficient installation of renders and mixing of masonry mortars and supports its clients with technical advice and machines (from Eirich, BHS, Stock BIG- Germany).


In a joint statement, Sathiesh Kumar, General Manager of Arkan Dry Mortar and Ferdinand Leopolder, President of MEDMA e.V. stressed the importance of automated systems for the future of smart building in the UAE and beyond. Leopolder was thankful that MEDMA itself will improve its position in Abu Dhabi tremendously with this new membership and cooperation partner.


Arkan Dry Mortar is part of the integrated industrial conglomerate Arkan Building Materials Co. PJSC a public joint stock company specializing in manufacturing of construction products in the UAE. This holding is producing cement (Al Ain Cement Factory), concrete blocks and paving stones (Emirates Blocks Factories in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain) and plastic piping and paper bags (ANABEEB in Abu Dhabi). Established in 2005, Arkan is 51 percent owned by General Holding Corporation (SENAAT), an entity wholly owned by the Government of Abu Dhabi, the remaining 49 percent of shares are listed with Abu Dhabi Securities Market (ADX), in order to allow the local shareholders to participate in the company’s business.

MEDMA warmly welcomes Arkan Dry Mortar as a new member.

7. Golden Gate Capital Acquires Active Minerals

Golden Gate Capital LLC San Francisco, California, USA has recently acquired the majority of all shares of Active Minerals International LLC (AMI) in Sparks, Maryland, USA. The stake was formerly held by venture capital firm Merit Capital Partners, Chicago, Illinois, USA. AMI, founded in 1964, focuses on the mining and processing of minerals such as attapulgite clays, aluminium silicates and kaolins for the use as rheological additives in various applications such as oil-well-cementing, coatings and drymix mortars. According to Golden Gate Capital, the company management will stay in place and enjoy full entrepreneurial freedom. Also, the management team retains a substantial part of the shares of AMI by itself. A transaction value was not disclosed.

8. Sika Opens New Plant in Guatemala

Sika AG of Baar, Switzerland has recently opened up a new plant in Palin (to the South of Guatemala City). The plant will produce concrete admixtures, liquid membranes and drymix mortars for the markets in Central America (Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador). Existing plants for concrete admixtures and offices were relocated to Palin, which also features a new logistic center for Sika. The new plant and the modernized relocated processes are said to yield a capacity increase by the factor 6.
