1. Core Team Formed to Establish Vietnam Drymix Mortar Manufacturer's Group

On 17. July 2018, over 60 drymix mortar experts met for the SEADMA Chapter Kickoff Meeting in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam. The comprehensive program included lectures by Binh Duong University, Vietnam Institute of Building Materials VIBM, SEADMA as well as company presentations by Actemium, Ashland, Haver & Boecker and Lahti Precision. Delegates from 18 different mortar companies (over 60% of the entire attendance) met with representatives of raw material suppliers as well as equipment manufacturers. After a short discussion, the assembly voted for establishing a small core team to further develop a representation of the drymix mortar industry of Vietnam this coming fall. Also, SEADMA is working on a Memory of Understanding with VIBM to regulate a future cooperation for the improvement of the specification situation for drymix mortars. In 2019, the 14th Annual SEADMA Conference will take place in Saigon, hopefully in the historic Rex Hotel (tbd.).

4. SEADMA Mortar Technology Day (7.11.18) and 13th Conference (8.11.18) in Bangkok: Program

The SEADMA Mortar Technology Day takes place in Bangkok on Wednesday, 7. November 2018, followed by a reception for all delegates to this event as well as to the 13th Annual SEADMA Conference (on Thursday, 8. November 2018). All three events take place at Swissotel le Concorde and are a cooperation of SEADMA with its local Chapter, incorporated under Thai Concrete Association TCA (co-hosts).

The SEADMA Mortar Technology Day is by invitation only and is intended as a focussed meeting of the Thai SEADMA members (currently mortar manufacturers Insee Mortar/SCCC, Parex, Siam Cement, Sika and Ubau, some confirmations pending) to present the advantages of drymix mortars to their target audience consisting of consultants, contractors and developers. Key topics include economical attractiveness, saving of labor cost, efficiency increase, jobsite cleanliness and reduced traffic, quality finishing, durability (low maintenance) and environmentally conscious construction. The SEADMA Mortar Technology Day differs from other SEADMA events, because it is by invitation (of the supporters) only and entirely focussed on SEADMA member's clients. Keynote speaker with be Khun Samart Homthong of Bouygues Thai, lecturing language will be Thai unless otherwise specified.

The SEADMA Cocktail reception on 7.11.18, 19:00, Swissotel le Concorde unites all delegates from the entire region (SEA) with the guests of SEADMA Mortar Technology Day. We are still looking for sponsors for this event. Pre-registration is mandatory.

The South East Asia Drymix Mortar Association SEADMA holds to its 13th Annual SEADMA Conference and Industry Showcase on Thursday, 8. November 2018 at Swissotel le Concorde, too. Here is a glimpse at our preliminary program (subject to change without notice; sorted alphabetically by lecturer name):

5. Announcing: Scaling Up 3D, The First Interdisciplinary Conference on Printable Mortars, Washington DC, early Summer or Fall 2019

High performance mortars with defined rheological properties as well as curing behaviour and strength development play a vital role when it comes to automated (robot-supported) printing of three-dimensional structures. This formulation design is key knowhow at drymix.info members and partners. Also, many partners of drymix.info provide mortar machinery and processing knowledge to this young industry, ensuring steady pressure at the extrusion point, continuous, controlable (and changeable) flow and finishing technologies.

By mutual request, drymix.info has decided to stage Scaling Up 3D, The First Interdisciplinary Conference on Printable Mortars, to take place in early Summer or Fall of 2019 in or near Washington D.C, USA. This event is intended to unite the drymix mortar industry with machinery, automation and robotics companies to create a fruitful dialogue for the advancement of 3D Mortar printing. Also we want to form a community to support expert exchange with and between ongoing research projects for both modular prefabrication of 3D mortar elements as well as in-situ printing of buildings. At this early stage, drymix.info has already enlisted the support of The European Society of Rheology (ESR) and its chairman Prof. Dr. Peter Fischer (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule ETH, Zürich, Switzerland) and their scientific publication Applied Rheology (issued by ESR). ESR is the umbrella organisation of national committees on rheology in Europe.

There is no Call for Papers yet and we are only in the process of inviting the Technical Committee (TC) for Scaling Up 3D, but it would help us a lot if we obtained signals of encouragement from the industry by means of sponsoring, lecturing proposals or volunteering to assist in our TC. We will use the drymix.info Newsletter to inform you further.

6. International Conference on Concrete and Digital Fabrication, Zürch, Switzerland, 10.-12.9.18

Rilem, Paris, France (acronym for Réunion Internationale des Laboratoires et Experts des Matériaux, Systèmes de Construction et Ouvrages | International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures), invites to the 1st RILEM International Conference on Concrete and Digital Fabrication. The event will be held from 10. to 12. September 2018 at ETH Zürich. The conference takes place during ROB|ARCH 2018, a symposium for robotic fabrication in architecture, art and design and there will be a common plenary session (date yet to be determined, currently in planning). Prior to the events, on Sunday, 9.9.18 the organizers offer restricted PhD training courses on rheology and admixtures. All in all many good reasons for all 3D mortar experts to come to Zürich in September!
