1. Post event report: 2nd Central American Drymix Mortar Meeting, Mexico City, 27.6.17

drymix.info had invited to its Second Central American Drymix Mortar Meeting and over 110 experts came to Mexico City on 26. June 2017 (almost 40% more than in 2015!). We met at Holiday Inn Plaza Universidad, which proved quite adequate for the event. Manufacturers of drymix mortars made up over 60 % of the assembly. Delegates came predominantly from Mexico, but we could also welcome a considerable amount (over 35 % of all delegates) from Central and South America and as well as from The Caribbean, the US, Canada and Europe. There were four blocks of scientific lectures and three networking breaks. After the program we could invite all delegates to a cocktail reception, which carried on well into the evening, thanks to our sponsors Haver&Boecker, J. Rettenmaier & Söhne (JRS) and Kerneos.

The Founding Ceremony of the Malaysia Drymix Mortar Manufacturer's Association MDMMA takes place at Seri Pacific Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on 26. July 2017 from 11:00 to 13:00, followed by a light snack. The formation team of the Malaysia Drymix Mortar Manufacturer's Association MDMMA has succeeded in convincing Matthias Gelber to deliver the Keynote Speech. Matthias Gelber, former "greenest man on earth", is a renowned activist for the preservation of nature and community building - and at the same time a specialty drymix mortar expert. He will talk about "Environmentally Compatible Building Materials with Particular Focus on Drymix Mortar Technology". Also Tim Tan of Affordable Abodes will present mortar applications and social entrepreneurship for a "self-grown" low income homes project in Southern Malaysia. In order to commemorate the formation of MDMMA, SEADMA, in cooperation with drymix.info, will donate MYR 1.000 towards Shah Alam Trees for Life - a not-for-profit activity assisting Shah Alam Council to become a carbon neutral city. The donation supports a tree planting at Taman Rekreasi Sg.Bulo, Shah Alam, in August.

Founding Members can delegate 2 persons free of charge, all additional personnel is charged at MYR 100 per person. Admission for mortar manufacturers is MYR 100 per person. All other observers pay MYR 800 (reduced to MYR 400 for SEADMA and/or drymix.info member companies).

6. German Government Regulates Removal and Disposal of Thermal Insulation Panels Made from EPS

Germany is amongst the Nations with the longest track record of thermal insulation on buildings (External  Insulation and Finishing Systems EIFS, also called ETICS). The first systems were developed and applied as early as 1974, after the first oil crisis. EIFS have proven extremely durable, but in the meantime requirements have changed and thus some of them needed replacement. Since decades, flame retardant expanded poly-styrene (EPS) boards were used successfully used in this application. In order to achieve a proper fire rating, Hexa Bromine Cyclo Dodecane (HBCD) has been used in the panels, which requires special precautions when disposing. Recently, HBCD was listed as persistent organic pollutant (POP) and the disposal chain for EIFS waste was halted.

In order to address the backlog in EIFS refurbishment and to provide for economic safety when disposing of the materials. the German Government has recently approved a new regulation which ensures proper documentation of EIFS waste from renovation and refurbishment from the jobsite to collection points and then on to a municipal incineration power plant. Contractors are required to act in accordance with the new regulation and to provide the documentation for each project. Hence there is a safe and environmentally compatible procedure in place now and the many jobs of improvals on EIFS and entire renovations can be carried out.

7. Akzo Nobel Coatings Division Acquires Flexcrete Technologies

Akzo Nobel N.V., Amsterdam, The Netherlands, has recently acquired the concrete repair and protection manufacturer Flexcrete Technologies, Leyland, United Kingdom. The cooperation between the two companies dates back to 2010 when Flexcrete's range of mortars and cementitious coatings (tradename Intercrete ) were combined with Akzo Nobel's resin-based coating and lining systems. Flexcrete’s existing staff will entirely be taken over by Akzo Nobel, and the founders Graham James and Chris Lloyd will continue to manage the company. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
