1. Open for Entries: The SEADMA/MEDMA Technical Bulletin Nr. 11 Goes into Production in August

The SEADMA/MEDMA Technical Bulletin (TB) has become a standard source for scientific and market information in South East Asia, India and the Middle East. TB 11 goes into production in August. This is the last chance to position a scientific article, an advertorial or just a (colored) ad into this comprehensive publication. The Technical Bulletin Nr. 11 will be published on occasion of The 11th Annual SEADMA Conference in Jakarta in November and the Fourth MEDMA Workshop on Big 5 in Dubai (see below). SEADMA and MEDMA have increased own topics in TB 11, so you will find an Interview with F.A. Al Hoseiney, SEC Saudi Arabia, a detailed report on the EIFS event in Riyadh on 30. May 2016 and an article about the world's first printed office in Dubai in the MEDMA part. The SEADMA part will feature a case study on the construction of a small hotel in Bangkok as well as a report about the newly formed SEADMA Mortar College in Singapore (and some of the workshops conducted there; see below). Publication fees apply, please consult with us if interested.

2. Post-Workshop Report: SEADMA Skills Training in Singapore in June 2016

The "SEADMA Professional Skills Training on Basic Principles of Tile Installation for Tradesmen with Hands-On Application" took place on Thursday, 16. June 2016 in Sungei Kadut, Singapore. There, SEADMA inaugurated its SEADMA Mortar College (in the premises of Admaterials, a subsidiary of Exova). This half-day training course was specifically designed for foreign tradesmen, we had 10 trainees, predominantly from China, Singapore and Thailand.

The training started with a theoretical part, where Ferdinand Leopolder gave a short overview of all drymix mortar applications in construction, Tim Tan then explained the different types of tile adhesives and the importance of the correct choice of material. Leslie Tan of Ardex followed with practical advice on tiling and explained the tools, supplies and the mixing process. By request of our students, we also went into details on the expansion joints, although joints and tile layouts are actually part of our more advanced class for CTA (A-2 and A-3).

After a short break, the practical, hands-on session followed in the wet area downstairs. Leslie Tan led the first part and instructed the students about the basic mixing principles and the laying of floor tiles. He used an Ardex TE S-1 type tile adhesive. He also showed the laying of a large-format tile. After hesitating for a moment, all students went down on their knees and enjoyed the hands-on practice. For the grouting of (wall) tiles, Tim Tan had prepared six samples. Tim used material from E-Mix (white grout) for this purpose and led the training session, where the students had to work in groups of three.

According to the students (which received Certificates of Participation at the end) the Goal of this workshop to convey a basic understanding of drymix mortars for tiling was reached, the SEADMA members present also thought similarily and now plan the next workshops at SEADMA Mortar College. SEADMA is determined to integrate its trainings eventually with the skills training program the Building and Construction Authority Singapore (BCA) offers to train unskilled foreign laborers in Singapore.
