2. MEDMA EIFS-Workshop in Riyadh, 30.5.16: Post-Conference Report

Over 80 delegates attended the Workshop on EIFS at Al Waseel Hills Villa Project on 30 May 2016. MEDMA and SASO had set up a domed (and airconditioned!) tent right outside the perimeter of the development, also, a sample wall had been erected nearby in order to show all details of a perfectly installed External Insulation and Finishing System (EIFS). One wall was even colored with the warm brown tones of the actual project (see our photo to the right). DMC-Mix, Tecon and Wacker were the main sponsors. After an overview of EIFS in Europe and its significance for the Nations there by Ferdinand Leopolder (MEDMA), Abbas Kanisan (Wecker) presented the sytem in all technical detail. He also reported of comparison testing under scientific conditions that was carried out in various climate zones in China. Then Eng. Al Sairafi (Nasir Construction, Bahrain) reported about thermal insulation applied on individual villas and townhouses in Bahrain. There actual utilities bills have been compared over a long period of time showing a decrease in electricity cost of almost 30% (using 35 mm EPS on a single layer concrete blockwork!).

Outside the tent, Ferdinand Leoplder explained the individual components and the need to certify the complete and entire system using the sample wall. After snacks in the tent, the assembly walked on foot into the beautiful Al Waseel Hills Villa project and were invited into a finished and furnished mock-up villa by Sabic and Joannou & Paraskevaides (J & P, the general contractor). The difference in temperature from the outside to the inside was definitely noticeable, even if the air conditioners were not running. Back in the tent, Eng. Fahad Al Hoseiney, Head of Thermal Insulation at Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) gave an improvised speach about regulations on National and Municipal level (building codes) to enforce the mandatory application of EIFS (50 mm) on all new buildings in Saudi Arabia (an interview with Eng. Al Hoseiney will be published in MEDMA's upcoming Technical Bulletin Nr. 11).
