Opening Remark: Yola and I just returned from our wonderful 2nd UK and Ireland Drymix Mortar Meeting, at charming and historic Coombe Abbey near Coventry. By request of the audience, the next one will be in or around Dublin, Ireland, in 2028. Time to key you in on the plans we have until then (roughly). 1. Announcing: The International Conference on Building Rehabilitation, Renovation, Refurbishment and Re-Purposing ICB4R in Shanghai, 25 and 26NOV26

The need to preserve the structures and to update and renovate commercial and residential real estate is imminent and obvious, especially in China.: After 15 to 20 years of service, residential and commercial buildings are often in desperate need of repair, new legal requirements demand renovation (e.g. of facades with non-flammable thermal insulation), technical refurbishment (updating, modernization) is in place in many buildings. Last but not least, mainly in Europe, re-purposing of light commercial construction to residential apartments starts to play a major role.

The International Conference on Building Rehabilitation, Renovation, Refurbishment and Re-Purposing ICB4R takes place in Shanghai, China, on 25. and 26. November 2026 at Grand Millennium Hongqiao Hotel. ICB4R covers all scientific and practical aspects of our pressing need to keep infrastructure as well as commercial and residential real-estate functioning and aesthetically pleasing.

The Technical Committee of ICB4R unites expertise from China and Europe: it is being headed by Prof. Dr. Johann Plank, Technical University Munich (TUM; Chairman), assisted by
Prof. Dr. Wang Ru, Shanghai Tongji University
Prof. Dr. Kong Xiangming of Tsinghua University
Prof. Dr. Andreas Gerdes, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Sino German Institute for Advanced Building Materials, Quingdao
Dr. Christian Kober, Ted Wang and Ferdinand Leopolder (drymix.info). 
The Technical Committee of ICB4R has issued a Call for Papers, it expires on 31. July 2026. 

Admission to the International Conference on Building Rehabilitation ICB4R is CNY 5100 | 650 Euro per delegate, reduced to CNY 3.600 | 550 Euro for drymix.info members and partners. Drymix mortar manufacturers pay only CNY 1.500 | 190 Euro p.p. (this rate is also applicable to students and faculty). A special travel grant is available for drymix mortar manufacturers coming from outside China. Also: arrangments have been made to pay in China using the usual channels (e.g. WeChat, UnionPay CC), please inquire with us.

Itecons, Institute for Research and Technological Development in Construction, Energy, Environment and Sustainability at University of Coimbra, Portugal - in cooperation with drymix.info, The International Community for Drymix Mortars - is inviting drymix mortar experts to join and contribute to The International Conference on Mortars and Thermal Rendering Systems - VI Simpósio de Argamassas e Soluções Térmicas de Revestimento MTRS. The symposium takes place in lovely Funchal on the Island of Madeira, Portugal from 13. to 15. January 2027. The conference language is english, the Conference Chairs are Isabel Torres, Itecons / University of Coimbra, CERIS, Dept. Civil Engineering, Gina Matias, Itecons / University of Coimbra, CERIS and Ferdinand Leopolder, drymix.info.
