Subject: Limestone versus Silica sand
Many pre-bagged renders seem to based on limestone sands rather than silica sands.

Are there technical reasons for this or is it only a matter of colour?

One reason for using limestone instead of quartz sand is the particle form which has influence on the workability: Limestone is crushed and has sharp-edged particles. Quartz sand has more round particles. The crushed limestone gives better anti-sagging properties than the quartz sand.
